RO Perm – Troubleshoot Guide- No Shut-Off

RO System Diagnostic: Uninterrupted Flow Fault

Should your RO system exhibit a continuous wastewater flow, failing to stop even when the storage tank is full, three primary causes are worth investigating:

  • A defective or non-responsive Permeate Pump.
  • A compromised or blocked Check Valve.
  • A leak present in one of the outlets if your RO system services several dispensing points.

Conduct the following diagnostic test to identify the problem:

Check Valve and Permeate Pump Test:

  1. Let the RO system fill the storage tank completely.
  2. Shut off the feed water supply.
  3. Open the tank valve.
  4. Detach the RO’s black drain line from the drain saddle.
  5. Examine the black line for any water leakage.

  Interpretation:

  • Persistent drainage indicates a faulty Check Valve, which requires replacement.
  • No drainage suggests the Permeate Pump is the issue and should be replaced.

  Solutions:

  • Replace the Check Valve (see diagram point E).
  • Replace the Permeate Pump (refer to diagram).

  Ordering Details:

  • Check Valve: Order Here – Item# Check Valve, $9.
  • Permeate Pump: Order Here – Item# PUMP-PERMEATE, $80.

Inspect for Leaks in Extra Output Lines:

If your RO system has multiple outlets, check these lines and connections for pressure leaks. Even small leaks may prevent the system from turning off.

  Additional Tips:

  • A malfunctioning RO shut-off can cause the prefilters (stages 1, 2, and 3) to deplete. If the system has been running continuously for more than a month or two, these prefilters might need replacement to safeguard the membrane.
  • Utilize a TDS meter to evaluate the stage-4 Membrane’s condition.
  • Regularly changing prefilters every 12 months is essential for system maintenance and to avoid damage to the Auto-Shut-Off valve and stage-4 Membrane.

  Filter and Membrane Replacement Timetable:

  • Stage-1, 2, & 3 Prefilters: Replace annually. Cost: $39 per set.
  • Stage 4 RO Membrane: Replace every 3-5 years depending on water quality. Cost: 65 (RO45, RO-PUMP models) or 85 (RO90, RO-PERM models).
  • Stage 5 Polish Filter: Replace every 3-5 years. Cost: $10.
